Two fully-funded PhD positions are available in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Massachusetts, Lowell. Admitted students will perform research in the following areas:
Position #1: conduct research on power grid modeling and monitoring, renewable energy integration, and machine learning applications.
Position #2: conduct research on communication network survivability, software-defined networking, and their applications to smart power grids.
Candidates considered for these positions are expected to have a solid educational background in the area of power systems OR in the area of communication networks. Experience on power electronics, control, optimization, or machine learning would be a good plus. Candidates should be able to start their PhD studies at UMass Lowell in fall 2021 or spring 2022, with their currently pursued bachelor or master's degrees completed before enrollment.

UMass Lowell is home to WindSTAR, an Industry / University Cooperative Research Center (I/UCRCs) funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), and is also a partner of Office of Naval Research (ONR) on energy resiliency research. Students have entensive opportunities to conduct inter-disciplinary research on cutting-edge topics driven by industrical needs. Dr. Lin and Dr. Vokkarane's groups have built wide collaborations with other universities, national labs, and the industry, and actively recommend students for internship and full-time job opportunities. UMass Lowell campus is 45-minute drive to Boston, one of the most vibrant cities in technology and education in North America.
