Essay title: The lessons we take from obstacles we encounter can be fundamental to later success. Recount a time
when you faced a challenge, setback, or failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the
experience?

A musical note by itself does not make any sense. A beautiful melody will only be created if you link them together
with the right tempo and color (mood of the music). However, the journey to achieving a beautiful melody does not
come easily.

“Okay… Are you ready? Press “C”. Hold it for 2 counts. 1, 2, lift! No… lift it after the 2. Let us try it again.”
I joined an English medium school when I was 13 years old. It was like a new life. Everything was very different. I
felt miserable and clueless due to my shyness to reach out to people, but I continued to strive to do my best.
I thought everything was going to be fine, but then, very soon all the drama followed. I was often left alone, and
certain people disliked me. Once, on one of my friend’s birthdays, I thought I would be invited because she had
initially said that she wanted to invite me to her party. However, her other friends disliked me, so they persuaded
her to not invite me. It was very hurtful when I knew the truth. From this lesson, I learnt to treat others better and
be the bigger person.

I did not understand why I was treated this way, but I knew there was something that I had to do. Not only that I
wanted to fit in, but I also wanted to stand out.

I wanted to prove to others that I can be someone that was better than they think. By joining a plethora of
activities, I gained confidence. I collected experiences bit by bit, meeting new people one by one, learnt more and
more, and my English became more and more fluent. Very soon, my music teacher noticed my talent and I began
performing a lot in assemblies and concerts. It was like my debut to the school. More people knew me. Teachers
treated me as a good student and consistently supported me.

“Yes! You got it right! Next note, this is a “D”. 1, 2…”

A go-getter takes chances, while a quitter gets none. Opportunities were laid on the table; I soon became a
prefect, then head prefect, then finally a head student for my last two years in high school. I stood out as an
applicant by my willingness to serve the school and my caring personality.

I soon realized that I was gifted in management. I was not taught by anyone about management, but I can
organize events, performances and drama productions very efficiently. I am very passionate for project/event
management and would be the first to volunteer whenever I have the opportunity. I could stay up all night and
forget about everything when working on an event/project. I have the skills that I need to succeed in this:
communication skills, organizational skills, creativity skills and more.

I have practiced my management skills with a wide range of experiences, for example: organizing events, being a
student ambassador during open days, conducting meetings and so much more. I am given many opportunities as
I am the leader of the student leadership executive. Throughout these experiences, I learnt important lessons: the
most memorable lesson was from organizing the school’s summer ball. I was challenged because we had a team
that was not cooperative and not everyone was willing to put in the work. After that experience, I learnt how to
manage a group that was not as effective and to just trust others and leave the job up to them.

Challenges always follow me, and I always strive to overcome them. I take on challenges even when the majority
would not dare to. I believe that anyone can do anything they want to do if they work hard enough.

After 10 years of mastering the piano: “You ready? Remember to keep breathing and to show the world what
you’ve got!”
