I’m Indian American and grew up in a city in the US that was mostly East Asian. First, both Indian and Chinese immigrants have been very successful by any measure. Indian Americans have the highest per capita income of any ethnic group in the US at $122,026 (2016). Taiwanese are at $90,221 and Chinese overall (including Taiwanese) are at $73,788. In comparison the average white household is only at $61,349 so both groups are very successful.
.
That said, I think overall Indians have done a better job at succeeding in the US and reaching higher levels in business, politics, and media. As others have noted there have been two Indian American governors in the mainland US and at least 5 members of Congress right now. Just off the top of my head I can think of several others who have had high level positions in government such as Preet Bharara. In contrast outside of Hawaii East Asians have not done so well politically. There are only 2 Taiwanese and 1 Chinese member of Congress right now and Gary Locke was the only non Hawaii governor of Chinese descent.

Likewise, there are several CEOS of Indian descent including at Google, Microsoft, Mastercard, Adobe, and Pepsi. United and Citibank also in the past had Indian CEO’s as did McKinsey. In contrast, I can only think of a couple prominent East Asian business leaders such as the ex founder of Yahoo who is no longer even CEO of that company.
Even in media I’ve seen in recent years a lot more South Asian American actors and comics such as Mindy Kalang and Hasan Minhaj. And these actors seem to break out of regular stereotypes whereas East Asian actors in the US get type cast too much.
I think Indians benefit from moving to the US speaking fluent English and having been educated in English back in India. They also are more accustomed to western society. When I was in school the East Asian kids had parents who just told them to memorize, do well on tests and get into Harvard. That was everything to them. I think South Asians understand that in the US sometimes it’s better to have average academic credentials but be a risk taker and more outgoing. You need to be able to manipulate people and stand up for yourself to succeed in the US. Too many East Asians think they can just be the worker bee their entire life, this is a big cause of the bamboo ceiling. |
