【致富手册】询问PS的主题 -- iq28慷慨分享09fall成功的ps!!

都说ps要分为3个部分，背景，研究，和idea
但我还是有点不明白怎么通过一个主题来贯穿
看到有人写性格，比如坚强啊，不怕困难啊
看到有人写interested，比如从小开始的，父母培养的
看到有人写为什么要读phd
突然有点迷惑，到底ps的主题是什么呢，到底用什么来贯穿会比较好，还是说不需要主题，就分别写3个部分的内容就好了？

发动自己认识的人力资源，看看往年走掉的人ps都怎么写的。
当然最主要还是写出自己真实的想法跟激情，嗯。。
主要就讲讲做过什么，对什么感兴趣，以后想做什么，为什么要来你们家，写清楚就行了。别的方面稍微带一两句就行。可以按照小标题一段段写。我当时是第一段扯淡，相当于是who am I，然后分段讲做过什么（简略，提到了如果有兴趣请参考最后面的独立的研究经历），职业规划是什么，为什么实现职业规划要PhD，为什么选择Delaware的PhD，最后列出了一个research summary。
干脆把自己当时的PS贴上来了，抛砖引玉吧，我自己闷着也没用，虽然在坛上众多想去牛校的人眼里这ps没啥价值。
现在看当时的语言真是。。。不过当时写完之后感觉delaware真是没有理由不要自己。。嘿嘿

I read the personal statement twice and felt that it needs to be revised
completely. Typically a statement includes several subsections. Firstly,
the applicants need to tell the admission committee what are their
long-term research interests and briefly, why. Then they should tell them
what efforts have they paid toward the goal. How prepared are they for the
graduate program. These could include course work, lab working experience
and their specific, unique life experience. The key is not to tell others
stuff that all applicants have done, such as the basic curriculum. But
unique aspects of this can be interesting. For example, they have done
particularly well in some or all courses. They have taken courses from
graduate school or from other fields. They have done experiments and gained
some solid lab experience. They are from particularly poor family or harsh
environment and succeeded, etc.



Committee members are also interested to know what applicants expect to
achieve in graduate school. What will be their long term career plan and
how the graduate training will facilitate their efforts.



It could be helpful for the applicants to identify some specific research
areas and potential PIs in their statement. However they should be careful
because it can backfire. The PI might not be in the search committee or not
powerful enough.



The statement you gave me needs to eliminate the first section about the
definition of “scientist”. It should also compress and refine his/her
description on the lab experience. It is great, but reads very redundant.
Lastly, I can sense the tone that the applicant “lectures” the admission

committee. This can be dangerous and annoying to read. The applicant should

also add stuff that I just described.

主要是写自己做过了什么，自己能做什么，PS就是求职信，你和雇主打交道，他会管你是谁培养你的？他只关心的是你来了以后能不能给他干活，能干多少活。

看学校列出的PS的要求，有的可以写得很personal，有的就要写的很学术了

好的PS都有主题的，可以谈自己为什么热爱这个学科，自己的职业规划，等等
主题自己选择，符合学校要求，又突出自己的优点

多读些范文找找灵感，学习一下成功的申请者都是怎么组织材料的

当时不懂啊，呵呵。其实现在也不懂{:4_83:}
以前一直以为中国人最大的挑战是听说。其实只要你别天天跟老中混，听说长进会很快；现在才发现读和写的问题真是更大。。。能看懂的也就是技术类的文章，最多加点新闻，政策类文学类的。。基本看不懂。至于写，现在也就电邮能有机会练练，估计也是一塌糊涂，更不用想去写一些正式的东西了。。。

其实我最喜欢的地方还是图书馆，GIT图书馆肯定有这方面的书籍，估计在Career那个部分，就算没有，也能从别的学校的图书馆借来 ^^
