I am an international student from Taiwan. And I am pursuing my MS Computer Science degree in the U.S.. I was hesitated to point out this fact because my opinions might be considered as a bias if the officials know that I am an international student. However, I decided to speak it out loud because I have come to the U.S. for more than 4 years and I know a fact that job competition doesn't really exist, especially in Computer Science field.

As I said before, I have been to the U.S. for more than 4 years. I have made a lot of American friends, and I noticed a fact that majority of American students are more interested in Biology, Dental, Physic and Medical major rather than Computer Science. I asked almost all American that I have met in the U.S. "Why don't you guys chose CS as your major?", and I usually got the answer like "Being a doctor has more benefits and I can help people. Why should I sit there and code?". By mention this is because that Computer Science is the most popular major for international students in the past few years. So, if the job competition does exist, computer science will be the biggest competition. But the fact is that not a lot of American students want to study computer science and be a professional programmer, which leads another fact that if you ever go to a class with CS students in a school and check it out, you will find out that majority of the students are international students but not American.

When I interned in a company in NY, I once talked about job competition with my boss who is American. He said that "It is not because that I don't want to hire American, you can see there are still some American programmers in our company. But the fact is that it is hard to find an American programmer in reality because Computer Science field is not a popular major for American."

Despite all I have mentioned above, the U.S. is known good and strong because of its' diverse society. If the STEM is cancelled, it will influence many international students desire to study in the U.S. because students want to have the opportunities to practice what they learn in the U.S.. (Students can't really gain working experience in one year) It can affect the U.S economy because it will reduce the number of international students come to the U.S., and once the number of international student in the U.S. has decreased, school will start cutting down the amount of professors because there are no as many students as before, which actually affects the job opportunity in other field and entire economy in the U.S..

In fact, canceling STEM is just a extreme way to temporarily solve the issue. It is not a realistic and a long term solution. If the U.S. government really worry about the job competition, the better way is to train more American students in diverse fields instead of cancelling international students' right and opportunities.

再来一条, Comment Tracking Number: 1jz-8ma0-k72c

I strongly support the OPT extension program that allows STEM majors students to work here up to 36 months.

This proposed rule can help tech companies better keep their international employees, which is important to the whole US tech industry. We know that there is a high demand for labors in the tech industry in US. Due to the lack of US citizens available in the tech industry, tech companies need international students to fill in positions. One problem is that international students will get deported if they don't get selected in H1B system once their OPT expires, and the chances to get selected in H1B lottery is pretty low because of the increasing number of petitions every year. Therefore, passing this proposed rule will help tech companies better keep their international employees by allowing them to take more attempts in the H1B lottery system. . ----

Besides, US's competitiveness in STEM major will decline without those students. US STEM major is leading the whole world, which is one of the reason why US is leading the whole world. Losing those students not only means the decline of competitiveness in STEM major, but also means that those students who come back home will make contributions in the STEM major for those countries. So, US will face the consequence that the gap between US and the rest of the world will be reduced and eventually US will no longer lead the whole world in STEM fields if there aren't enough citizens can participate in tech industry.
