博士第一年导师建议我写survey paper求问是不是坑?

CS phd, 第一年导师说:
Survey papers, if well written, can attract a lot of citations and the attention of the community. It will also help you build good foundations on the subject before doing the actual development. This will require building a good bibliography of related papers, categorizing them in terms of their contribution and identifying research challenges and opportunities for future progress.

但我感觉survey paper一般都写很长,很花时间. 而且好像别人也不会看中survey paper的引用量? 我应该拒绝写不?

Offer some different thoughts here: I don't think writing a survey paper and publish is a good practice for 1st year grad students. Actually, like LZ mentioned, it will take a great effort to fully understand one particular field and then write an insightful survey to publish. For 1st year grads, this task might become even more challenging when you have a few courses to take. However, it is very critical to get to know your research field fast and comprehensively. So I'd say try use it as a motivation to dive deep in your research area but do not push yourself too hard for a publication of merely survey.

看到楼主被骂醒了我也放心了。
虽然不是高大上的CS PHD，但是write survey get general ideas in the field还是超级有用的。不要管最后发布发表。PhD一二年级就是要像海绵吸水一般。

不是坑吧，我感觉多读paper，了解这个方向有什么好做的，其实挺好的。

不大量读paper，你怎么可能快速了解这个领域，

PhD初期就是打基础的，就算你不写survey一样需要读很多paper。很多学校的的资格考试也就是选一个topic写一个小survey。
说句实话，你这么问真感觉太功利了。有很多很多PhD是没有老板funding没有老板指导的，真的是有点不知福。

读很多paper肯定是免不了的, 我的顾虑是写survey要写的全面就要读很多和自己研究无关的方法. 然后写也很花时间.

我们硕士都要写paper review. 课的话一周一篇， 而且还要提问，presention, quiz。 你PHD肯定要花这时间，不愿意你还都博，干啥，就业最实际。。。

没有老板funding没有老板指导的，这是国内的PHD吗？
