(Are you) In the middle of something? 正在忙吗? =Are you busy right now?
What are you up to? 你正在作什么? （有时候隐含口气不好的意思）
接近What’s up?/What are you doing?
I know what you are up to. (我知道你在干些什么勾当.)
另一个比较常用的解释是, “进展的如何了?”-I am writing Chapter 3 now.
Can you just give me a ballpark figure? 大概的数字.
什么是ballpark figure：通常在棒球比赛时都会报今天的观众人数, 如49,132 人。这个数字49,132 就是ballpark figure,只是一个大约的估计数字而已
I'll need a ballpark of the revenue last year." (我需要去年的营收的大约数字.)


Bottom line: We have to ship this order by Friday. 最后底限,不能再退让的原则
Bottom line: We have to turn into profit by 2002. 最重要的是
财务报表上面是一大堆密密麻麻的数字, 告诉你公司的资产有多少, 折旧多少, 应收帐款多少. 但是这些都不是最重要的, 最重要的在最最下面那一行(bottom line), 叫净赚(Net earnings) 告诉你这家公司总共加起来到底是赚钱还是赔钱, (这其实才是最重要的, 不是吗?) 所以bottom line 这个字后来就变成了有“最重要的是...”的意思.
In business, If you don't take care of your customers, somebody else will. And that is the bottom line.

The new CFO was sent to bring the company out of the red. 从赤字中拯救出来.
之前提到的bottom line ：
如果是用红笔写的,表示公司整体上来说是赔钱的，in the red，unprofitable. lose money
相反的如果是用黑笔写的, 则表示是赚钱的in the black.profitable, make money

Non-profit非营利性质的, 不以赚钱为目的. (Not for profit organization)如慈善
Vs. nonprofitable指不赚钱的就等於unprofitable 或是non-profit-making. (For profit organization)

Shelly just called in sick.打电话来请病假.
正常的请病假 I need a sick/medical leave for two days." (我需要请两天病假.)请事假(personal leave), 你可以说, "I'm asking for a three-day paid/unpaid personal leave for my wife's labor." (因为我老婆要生了, 我想要请三天假.)
亲人去世一般给bereavement leave
公司大家都放的假叫company holiday
部分人因为宗教信仰单独放假叫religious holiday
自己生孩子放假maternaity leave（一般6-8 weeks）
老婆生孩子放假 paternaity leave（一般2 weeks）
至於这个假是扣不扣钱? (paid/unpaid)就看公司的政策而定了.

分开来写:lay off 是动词, 但合起来写layoff 则是名词

找工作时不要说I’m unemployed/I just got laid off 要说I am between jobs.

为什么叫 graveyard shift 呢? 其中有一个广为流传的故事是这么说的, 在十九世纪时, 人们有时候会不小心把还活着的人当成死人埋掉. 为了避免这种悲剧发生, 所以他们在每个棺材里都装上电铃, 以便让这些意外醒来的“屍体”能够按铃求救. 也因此必须另外安排一位仁兄晚上时在墓地(graveyard) 里巡查, 以便有人按铃时能即时通知家属. 所以大夜班后来就以此得名, 成为了graveyard shift. 至於你相不相信这种传说呢? 就看你自己了!

Surprise! 老美有一种party 就叫surprise party. 通常主角是在未被告知有party 的情况下来到会场, 然后大伙们就一起跳出来喊, "Surprise!"

I'll call the cops. 打电话叫警察. I'll call 911/ I'll call firetrucks/I’ll call for help

She is a police officer.（以前警察都穿那种有铜扣(copper) 的大衣, 所以警察就被昵称为copper. 后来日子久了就变成了cop.原来有一点歧视的味道，不过日子久了, 连警察们自己都互称是cop,就变成是一个中性了）

I was pulled over by the State Patrol. 我被公路巡警给拦下来.
之前提到警察叫cop, 但这只是一个总称, 事实上我们还可以把警察细分成许多种. 在美国每一州都有州立警察队, 称之为State Patrol. 他们通常都分布在州际公路(Interstate) 上抓超速的人. 另外每一个郡(county, 大小相当于我们的县) 也有自己的警察, 这种警察叫sheriff. 像笨霖我住的这里属于Fulton County, 所以这里的警察就叫Fulton County Sheriff. (记得以前在学校学到sheriff 这个字都是指“警长”, 但事实上它应该还有另一个意思就是指“郡警”, 相当于台湾的县立警察局). 还有每个城市有所谓的City Police. 例如来亚特兰大这个城市就可以看到所谓的Atlanta City Police. 所以当你以后看到警车上写什么Patrol, Sheriff 或是Police, 你大概就知道他们是属于哪一个层级的.
属于联邦机构的则有 FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation, 联邦调查局) 和DEA (Drug Enforcement Administration 打击毒品机构) 在这里工作的人就不叫police 了, 他们叫agent. (探员). 如果有看过人魔(Hannibal) 的人我想一定印象深刻, 女主角Clarice Starling 就是一个FBI agent. 至于那些在第一幕出现一些家伙背后写着斗大的DEA 则是打击毒品的探员. 通常以毒品为主题的电影如 Traffic, Blow 都不难看见这些DEA 的身影.

如果你单说自己被绊倒了，没有特定指被什么东西绊倒:

Trip over 指的是自己主动去“绊到”什么东西，
I tripped over the extension cord/I tripped over my own feet./I tripped over myself.

社交舞Swing，Salsa, 美国传统的Square Dance (方块舞)

男生在跳这些社交舞时最重要的工作之一就是要会带舞 (lead)，而女生则是要跟舞(follow)。而一些最基本的舞步英文是这么说的，前进是forward，后退是back。踏一步是step，交叉是cross。还有常用的像是交换步是triple step，摇摇是rock，一只舞最后结束那个女生下腰的动作则是dip。

介紹一下 Fxxx 這個字. 注意: 如果你未成年, 或是認為本篇內容不適合你的風格, 請現在離開還來得及.

　好像也就2种用法，一种表示程度非常高，一种是当动词。

Fxxx 這個字可說是英文當中詞性最多, 也最多采多姿的一個字了.   當然, 除了性暗示外, 這個字還有許多的用法, 但都不是在公開場合或是跟長輩時說話可以用的, 大家如果沒有把握的話還是不要亂用才好.   還有記得不要去跟別人說這些都是小笨霖教你們講的.. 哈哈...

She is a terrific fuck.她真是一個美麗的尤物.(别轻易对女生讲！)

当你走进一家店小姐们通常都会走过来亲切地和你打招呼，问你"May I help you?/Are you looking for something?
答I'm just browsing/lookingg. 只是随便看看。
答I'm looking for a turtle neck sweater. Could you help me?/Do you have any turtle neck sweater?

May I try this on? 试穿Where is the fitting room?

有时候在试衣间前面会坐着一个晚娘面孔的女人，在你进去之前她会挡住你的去路，问你，"How many?" 这时你就要告诉她你拿了几件衣服，例如三件的话你就说，"Three." 这时她会给你一块上面写着3 的狗牌，在你进去之前要把这个牌子挂上你的门上，表示你进去的时候是三件，出来的时候也要是三件才行。

I like this tank top. It goes with my baggy jeans.
有一种男生穿的纯白的背心，看起来像内衣一样的tank top，老美把这种tank top 戏称为wife-beater。因为他们觉得会穿这种背心的人通常有结实的肌肉而且手臂上会有刺青。这给人的感觉就是回家之后喜欢打老婆.

live on campus 多半指大学生住在大学的宿舍(dormitory/dorms) 或是兄弟姐妺会(fraternity/sorority) 的宿舍 (Greek house)

水电取暖费等What utilities am I responsible for? Are utilities included?
做饭的炉子(range) ，烤箱是oven，热水器(water heater)，取暖炉子furnace
Do you use electricity or gas for water heater?" (你们用电还是瓦斯？)

不一定包含在utilities 的民生必需品则是cable TV service (有线电视，简称cable), phone (电话) 和internet connection service (上网)。这些在租房子前也不妨先问清楚，"I also need cable, what number do you think I should call?" (我还需要有线电视，你想我该打电话找谁？)

另fight也可以是吵架和打架，用verbal和phyiscal 区分打架

可以理解成climb是要用手的爬，hike是只用脚走

Gear 是集合名词(通常不用复数)原指小工具/机械装置, 口语上取代equipment
fishing gear、backpacking gear、camping gear
类似的Kit 通常是一整套的装备，例如camping kit 里面应该会包含帐篷，睡袋，炊具等等整组的露营用品，而分开来看每一项的物品都称为gear。
