Innovation in Translational Health Care Technology
The Stephenson School of Biomedical Engineering collaborates closely with the Stephenson Cancer Center (SCC) at the OU Health Sciences Center. The SCC is an NCI-designated cancer center and is the nation?s No. 1 cancer center for patient clinical trial accrual. Other strengths at OUHSC include diabetes, cardiovascular, aging, neuroscience, vision and musculoskeletal. We work closely with the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation, which employs over 400 staff who study cancer, heart disease, autoimmunity and aging.
Our doctoral students started three companies since 2017, which highlights the translational focus of the SBME research program. Regional entrepreneurship resources include Innovation to Enterprise and OK Bio.
In collaboration with the Institute for Biomedical Engineering, Science and Technology (IBEST) at OU, our students work closely with scientists, physicians and engineers. This collaborative multidisciplinary environment enables the translation of innovative ideas into health care technology.
Fellowships
Ph.D. students are guaranteed an annual stipend of $25,000. Stephenson, Alumni and Foundation fellowships are available for qualifying students at $30,000.
Stephenson School of Biomedical Engineering
The University of Oklahoma Gallogly College of Engineering
The Stephenson School of Biomedical Engineering (SBME) at the University of Oklahoma (OU) was founded with a historic $30 million gift in 2016. We have 10 core faculty, and more than 20 total graduate faculty, with ongoing faculty hiring. We have about 240 undergraduates and 25 graduate students, and we are active partners in outreach, diversity and inclusion efforts. Our core value is to create new technologies that advance human health.
In fall 2019, Gallogly Hall will open its doors. This brand-new 70,000-square-foot building will offer lab space for the biomedical engineering research and training programs. A vivarium will be available in the basement of Gallogly Hall to allow preclinical animal studies.
