- take notes like crazy, every day, review all the notes from all previous days, until you "get it". O(n^2)
- ask, ask, ask .... you get free questions for 2-3 months. make good use of it. just spread it out over many people, so you dont overload any single individual. Load balancing.
- volunteer to share your notes/learnings with the team, better yet, maintain a new hire wiki, so the next new person can leverage your knowledge base, show it to your teammates/boss and take credit!! Warm the cache.
- have lunch with folks on the team, build relationships ask questions, ask questions, ask questions. KNN
- take notes and ask your new hire buddy, if you don't want to interrupt the meeting. KNN
- ask your manager 1NN
- ask other new hires in nearby teams KNN
- if your team has new hire wiki/onboarding docs, read them like crazy, over and over. and then ask questions
- try to unblock yourself asap, don't let things fester. "not actively unblock yourself" is one of the top reasons new hires get into performance trouble.
If you have done this diligently for 3 months and still have no idea what's going on, either you are in the wrong job, or the company is doing something crazy. Either way, it's time to leave.... |
