A white St. Louis couple who pointed a semiautomatic pistol and a semiautomatic rifle at a group of Black Lives Matter protesters as they passed in front of their mansion last month are facing felony charges, despite a vow from Missouri’s governor that he would pardon them if they were convicted of any crime. Mark McCloskey, 63 years old, and Patricia McCloskey, 61, are each charged with one count of unlawful use of a weapon—exhibiting, according to a spokesman for the 22nd Circuit Court in St. Louis. The couple are seen in a widely shared video brandishing the weapons and shouting at the protesters as they marched past their house on June 28 on their way to the home of St. Louis Mayor Lyda Krewson. The couple’s attorney has alleged that protesters broke a gate to enter the private street, but charging documents by police say they walked through the gate. “They had every right to protect themselves,” Gov. Mike Parson, a Republican, said in a recent radio interview, adding that he would issue a pardon if they are convicted. “By all means I would, and I think that’s exactly what would happen.” In a statement, St. Louis Circuit Attorney Kimberly M. Gardner, a Democrat, said, “It is illegal to wave weapons in a threatening manner at those participating in nonviolent protest, and while we are fortunate this situation did not escalate into deadly force, this type of conduct is unacceptable in St. Louis,” according to the St. Louis Post Dispatch. Ms. Gardner said she would be open to resolving the charges with a form of probation that would mean no conviction for the McCloskeys if successfully completed, the paper said.  source
