Schools were closed during the epidemic, and many international students returned to China to continue their online lessons. Due to the so-called "firewall", it was difficult for students to watch online tutorials or access courseware. China’s Alibaba Group Holding Ltd (BABA.N) is seizing the new business opportunities brought about by the coronavirus: helping foreign universities bypass China's strict Internet controls and allowing mainland Chinese students to continue their classes. The Association of Universities told Reuters that shortly after the virus began to spread globally, Alibaba’s cloud computing department met with members of the organization and stated that it could establish a network within 48 hours to serve as a bridge between universities and students in mainland China.
The cost of building this network is also quite high. It is illegal to bypass the "firewall" through connection services such as virtual private network (VPN). It is illegal to not have a license in China, and only a few VPN providers are allowed to operate. Alibaba Cloud provides VPN options for colleges and universities through its cloud enterprise network, and Fortinet Inc. is its software supplier. The service allows students to access content from foreign universities stored in the cloud without delay, or watch related learning content online. It also provides a VPN-like experience when students browse the web looking for content that is only related to learning.
Alibaba Cloud also stated: “During the epidemic, cloud computing technology plays an important role in helping everyone adapt to the new life state. Our technology provides a solution that meets the important needs of students to continue learning. It should not be confused with any political affairs.” In addition, compared with Alibaba’s main e-commerce business, the revenue of the cloud computing department is insignificant. It has been actively promoting its services and plans to invest $28 billion in three years to build next-generation data centers. source
