Personal Statement
“Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you are gonna get”. This famous line appeared in the movie Forrest Gump exactly describes my mood now that I never expected I would harvest so many beautiful memories in Xinjiang, just as I never expected I would go to the distant Xinjiang alone to pursue my undergraduate studies four years ago.
When I came to Xinjiang, China, a multi-ethnic region with 47 ethnic groups living there, to start my college life, I was both anticipated and nervous. To be specific, I was looking forward to experiencing the exchange and communication of multi-ethnic cultures there; meanwhile, I was quite worried about whether I could blend with such an environment, especially when I knew that the dormitory roommates I would live with in the next four years were from four different ethnic groups, namely Han, Mongolian, Kazak and Tibetan. As time went by, it turned out that mutual respect and understanding kept us together as a family. For example, we appreciated and respected different customs and daily habits of different ethnic groups. Later, out of love for our dormitory, I wrote an article about it, Our Dormitory: A Family Full of Sunshine, which was noticed by my university first and then various media. Luckily, afterwards, our dormitory was even interviewed by these media, including People's Daily, Tianshan Net, Urumqi Education TV Station, Mobile SoHu, Urumqi Evening News, etc. During interviews, I would take the initiative to help these journalists do something within my ability, like moving photographic equipment and sharing materials. At the same time, I continued to write articles based on interesting things happened in my dormitory. In the process, I accumulated writing experience and more importantly, built friendship and later frequent communication with these journalists, from which the strong interest in journalism was cultivated.
With that passion, in the second semester of my junior year, I asked for a recommendation letter from a previously known journalist and then passed the interview of Tianshan Net smoothly. Here, my internship in Tianshan Net, the only major news website in Xinjiang began! During one mission, we were short of hands. Concerning that I was a newcomer lacking relevant experience, I was just assigned with small tasks to take news photographs independently for an activity commemorating the establishment of the Communist Party of China. However, I must accomplish it well. Without any guidance, I was both anxious and excited then. To ensure its smooth progress, I made detailed preparation according to a brochure about this activity to guarantee that my photographs would cover every special and important moments. I even learned useful photographic skills and prepared questions just in case. When the day came, I arrived at the venue two hours ahead of time to familiarize myself with the surroundings, and asked the staff for a new brochure to check whether there was a change. As the activity was proceeding, I did my duty in an orderly way, and coincidentally I noticed a professional photographer who was also taking news photos. I thought it might be a great chance for me to learn from him! I mustered up my courage to introduce myself to him as an intern reporter in Tianshan Net and expressed my hope to follow his steps. Fortunately, he agreed. At last, many of my photographs lived up to the expectation of my colleagues in Tianshan Net, and some were even better.

During break, I also got a chance to interview the speaker after full communication with the venue director. Thanks to the preparation before, the whole process went smoothly. Afterwards, I organized the materials of that activity and wrote a press release. When I submitted it to my intern teacher, he was pleasantly surprised and praised me for the active work attitude. After careful revision under his guidance, the news release was published successfully. Subsequently, during the days of internship, I published the other seven press releases. Every moment I saw my news release published, I got a sense of achievement which strengthened my faith in further delving into journalism.-baidu 1point3acres
In a blink of an eye, four years passed by! These special moments have taught me that, if we do not know what the next chocolate tastes like, just eat and enjoy it!
