Message from ISO concerning proposed rule to eliminate Duration of Status for F&J Visa Statuses

Dear UVA international students and scholars,

I am writing to you about the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's (DHS) proposed rule that was announced on September 25. This proposed rule, if implemented, would eliminate permission for students and scholars to remain in the U.S. for the duration of their status (D/S) as determined by their institution for F-1 students, their F-2 dependents, J-1 exchange visitors (including students, researchers/professors, and short-term scholars) and their J-2 dependents.  Instead, individuals would enter the U.S. for a fixed period of either two or four years, with options for extensions.

Please know that this is only a proposed rule, and that nothing has changed at this point. The U.S. government is offering a 30-day period to comment on this proposal.  I write to assure you that UVA will work strenuously with partners at peer institutions and professional higher education associations during this review process to advocate for our international students and scholars in this process. We will keep you apprised of progress as we go.

More broadly, I want to express again my support for and commitment to our international community during these uncertain times.  As President Ryan has regularly remarked this year, our international students and scholars are an essential part of UVA's identity as a global university, and integral members of our community.  Please know that we are here for you and will be working vigorously on your behalf.
