Openings:
The Data-Intensive Systems group in the School of Computing Science at Simon Fraser University (SFU) in Canada has openings at all levels (fully funded Thesis MSc, PhD) in the area of database systems on modern hardware. The group's research focuses on designing future data systems that leverage persistent memory (e.g., Intel Optane DC), multicore/manycore processors and high-speed networks. We have recently made multiple contributions in the area of indexing structures, parallel/lock-free programming for persistent memory and main-memory database systems, with publications appearing regularly in top database conferences and results being adopted by real commercial products. Visit https://www.cs.sfu.ca/~tzwang for more details.
Students with background and experience in systems-related areas (including but not limited to databases, OS, distributed systems) are encouraged to apply. Interested applicants for PhD/MSc positions may contact Dr. Tianzheng Wang at tzwang@sfu.ca with a recent resume and transcripts. Start date is flexible with SFU's fall/summer/spring admission cycles, preferably fall 2021.
Bio:
Tianzheng Wang is an assistant professor in the School of Computing Science at Simon Fraser University (SFU) in Vancouver, Canada. His current research focuses on database systems and related areas that impact the design of data-intensive systems, such as operating systems, distributed systems and synchronization. Tianzheng Wang received his Ph.D. and M.Sc. in Computer Science degrees from the University of Toronto in 2017 and 2014, respectively. He received his B.Sc. in Computing (First Class Honours) degree from Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 2012. He received the IEEE TCSC Award for Excellence in Scalable Computing (Early Career Researchers) in 2019 for contributions to scalable data processing.
About SFU:
Simon Fraser University is located in metropolitan Vancouver in Canada, one of the most livable cities in the world. Vancouver is home to many IT startups and important Canadian branches of international companies, such as Amazon Web Services, EA, Microsoft, Oracle, SAP and Salesforce. SFU CS has been consistently ranked among the top computer science departments in Canada and internationally. Data-related research at SFU has a long and proud history of over 30 years, and is currently ranked top 2 in Canada and top 15 in North America according to csrankings.org.
