The Sustainable Urban Mobility Lab (The SUM Lab) at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the George Washington University is currently seeking Ph.D. student(s) joining Spring or Fall 2023. The SUM Lab, directed by Dr. Zhengtian Xu, aims to understand, promote, and regulate emerging mobility services and vehicle technologies, to help enhance the connectivity and sustainability of urban mobility systems.

We welcome self-motivated students who hold a bachelor’s or master’s degree from the broad field of science and engineering, including but not limited to transportation engineering, industrial engineering, operations research, data science, control, economics, and mathematics. In particular, students intended to apply for this position SHOULD have strong enthusiasm for mathematical modeling and programming. Dr. Zhengtian Xu is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the George Washington University. His research aims at developing novel models and instruments and conducting data-driven quantitative analyses to address the questions, puzzles, and challenges that (will) arise in the incubation, development, and management of urban mobility services and infrastructures. His work is highly interdisciplinary, involving methodologies and ideas from system engineering, operations research, and microeconomics. His prior research efforts have been published in top-tier transportation research journals, including Transportation Research Part B/C, and Transportation Science. One of the papers won the 2016 Stella Dafermos Best Paper Award and the Ryuichi Kitamura Paper Award from Transportation Research Board of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. Dr. Xu obtained his Ph.D. and M.S. degrees both in Civil engineering from the University of Michigan and the University of Florida respectively in 2020 and 2016. His B.S. degree was received in Mathematics and Physics from Tsinghua University in 2014.
