===About Dr. Zheng & the lab:
Mai Zheng is the Harpole-Pentair Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at Iowa State University (ISU). He leads the Data Storage Lab (DSL) to investigate problems of real-world systems that affect data integrity, understandability, and other desirable properties. DSL has been fortunate to be sponsored by both government (e.g., NSF, USDA) and industry (e.g., Samsung, Western Digital). Their work appeared at storage systems venues (e.g., FAST, SYSTOR, TOS), high-performance computing venues (e.g., HPDC, ICS), and other systems venues (e.g., OSDI, ASPLOS, ATC). ===About ISU & Ames:
ISU is classified as "R1: Doctoral Universities - Highest Research Activity"  by the Carnegie Foundation. In a 2019 ranking, ISU is tied for 41st overall and tied for 22nd among publics in "Best Engineering Schools". Moreover, Computer Engineering is tied for 34th overall and tied for 20th among publics in the US (https://www.news.iastate.edu/news/2019/03/12/gradrankings19).

        （1）套磁信很重要。本质上这是一个推销自己的问题，也是每个申请人都有的一个公平机会。一封好的信是可以让人相信你的态度和潜力的。一两句话的信不如不写。有些同学来信诚恳，但主要询问了一些自己应该能找到答案的问题（比如学校网站都会有的申请流程等），也不是一个好的策略。预判听众的预期并精益求精，以后写paper作报告拉赞助等都需要类似的能力。
        （2） 有明显短板（e.g., 本科GPA< 3.0) 的同学并不是没有机会 （@KittenSun），但最好有其他优势来弥补。在相关实验室实习争取co-author paper或得到强推荐信，在工业界参与相关项目，维护丰富的github profile，在国内读研，等等都会有帮助。即使暂时没有，很多优势也是一两年内可以积攒出来的。有些不差钱的同学提到了自带干粮，也是一个优势。不管怎样的优势，在套瓷信中最好都能体现。
        （3）Timing 很重要。这次收到不少优秀同学的申请，没有offer不一定代表条件不好。

补充几点：
（1）“喜欢探索钻研”，“有思辨能力”和“相关背景”在一定程度上都是可以培养的，特别是背景知识。楼主切换过几次科研方向，相信很多同学的背景都不会比楼主当年差。计算机系统不是一个很火的方向，但一直是一个重要的领域，做得好不愁没出路（e.g.，DSL的学生毕业时都找到了适合自己的工作 https://www.ece.iastate.edu/~mai/students/students.html)
       
（2）DSL所在的Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE/ECpE) 隶属于College of Engineering，系里的Computer Engineering常年徘徊在全美三十几名 （US News）。ISU的Computer Science是不同的系,  隶属于College of Arts and Science,  排名相对较低（大约六十几）。
               
（3）ECE/ECpE 系录取过程很friendly. 第一步 pre-application 不需要申请费， 系里两周内会有初步评估和回复，对条件非常好的学生甚至会减免申请费.  欢迎大家提交 pre-application。具体步骤请见： https://www.ece.iastate.edu/admissions/graduate-admissions
想申请的同学需要满足系里的基本分数要求 (不需要GRE)：
                • GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) or higher
                • TOEFL Internet (iBT): 88
                • TOEFL Paper (PBT): 570
                • IELTS: 6.5
                • PTE: 59
                • Duolingo English Test: 105
