“Coming to the main point, MIS is not a way to get away from ''technical'' job profiles and get into ''management'' profiles. Please. Please I beg of you all and humbly request you to shed this mentality now. Sooner you do it, the better. Its not the right approach. Dont make your decision based on the fact that MIS will surely get you to sip coffee and check mails on your laptop. I will take 1 example to illustrate.

The information systems manager is often the hands-on troubleshooter for the company, being first to respond to issues regarding technology. This may involve setting up new networks, adding new users to existing networks, or monitoring or developing databases that will be used within the network. Since many companies have remote offices and locations the information system manager may be required to travel to these locations to help with problems or may simply be required to provide online or by phone support for assistance with technical issues.

Many information managers complete in-services to staff regarding new technology. While most of the technology will be computer based there may also be requirements for training staff in phone systems, fax or even specific data entry devices such as those used by sales people or representatives on the road or in remote locations. Excellent understanding of computer and computer systems, networking and ISPs as well as good communication skills and ability to work closely with others is very important for an information systems manager.

* Setting up, troubleshooting and monitoring current and new computer networks both internally and in remote locations.（当地和远程公司的网管）
* Providing technical support to systems users either in person, by phone, or through email or messenger systems.（技术支持：就是电话，email 啥的有问题可以找IS manager)
* Training staff on computers and communication technologies used within the company or agency.(给员工培训电脑和通讯技术。。应该是很基础的吧。。）
* Responding to questions regarding the system and capabilities of the current technology systems in use.（回答公司技术系统的问题。。）
* Making recommendations for new systems or upgrades of current systems that will best meet the customers and companies requirements.（还有就是更新系统和推荐新的公司系统，这工作跟IT咨询很类似）

正在MIS申请中（EE转MIS），本来想同时申请几个CS或者ECE。在实验室里接触过光通信、还有自然语言处理等等领域，觉得自己没有特别想研究的方向。我想请问牛人给像各位像我这样的 推荐几个偏软件的方向。

个人还是比较想利用MIS锻炼自己的communication skills，reading skills等软技能。

一直认为管理不是学出来的……

虽说这个Program看似很好，因为它把技术和管理相结合，按理来说前景确实很好，但是我们一是国际生，二是没有扎实的工作经验，如果一去美国读硕士就开始着重管理方面的知识，可能学的东西是虚的。我觉得要想在美国落脚下来，一定要有非常专业的技术，当你技术很牛时，那些Management的机会自己就会过来的。所以我建议还是先把专业知识在MS期间加强，争取能找到intern，再去一步步往管理上靠。
