academia的稳定性确实要比工业界好很多。但是前提是要能拿到tenure。
即使是拿到AP职位的难度都至少是进谷 ...

确实这是phd毕业后才考虑的问题 现在想过多了也没啥意义

“安稳”这件事is overrated....

不是想当faculty就能当faculty的，phd的时候如果没有发飙，后面走faculty基本不可能，千年博士后不是盖的。phd人多，faculty坑少，能走到faculty的phd既要有能力也要有运气的

i am kinda in the latter category - so far i enjoy constantly learning new things. I am not a generalist, but rather a "serial domain expert" in a few related domains.
there's something intrinsically fun and intellectually satisfying to keep touching new areas, learning new advances, looking at new applications with a fresh perspective and solve new problems in novel/not so novel ways.
For someone that really enjoys the technical side of things, being a long term, senior IC/tech lead/domain expert can be a satisfying career path in some of the 1st tier companies (maybe not in the lower grade ones,....). Yes you will sometimes have a boss that is %^&*(), but you can often jump ship pretty easily.

as for job security, frankly i have not seen many people who really suffered from this. I have only seen one person who kinda sequentially degraded his employer "grade" but kept a constant title. And even so, he never had a job gap longer than 1-2 months.

how "technical" a first line manager is, really depends on the company.

would love to see some perspective from line managers to directors. I dono if any VP visits this forum :D but yea, would love to see some points there.

说的太好了。。。追求安稳似乎结果都不太好

我一个亲戚哥哥，年轻的时候在standford cs混过，后来家里父母身体不好，独生子，回国了。现年38岁。24岁硕士毕业回国进入某跨国米国企业上海公司工作，至今。好像现在也是个manager，带人的。然后关键是，他爱coding，^_^。这个还是看爱好吧。
