Change in Admissions Policy for Ph.D. Program in Biostatistics at Columbia

Ran into admission chair in the hallway and got the following news:


Starting from fall of 2017, the admission to Ph.D. program is open to well qualified applicants holding or completing a bachelor's degree.


The department used to only consider applicants with a master's degree in statistics or biostatistics and the now policy is changed.


My guess is that, with the policy from previous years, they have not been that successful recruiting brilliant undergrads. The department offers fellowship support instead of RAships for well-qualified students with the itention that students can focus on coursework training in the first 2 years.

I think math/stats applicants and non-math/stats applicants are in different pools and will be viewed differently. You are not competing with the strong math/stats undergrads for admission, so don't worry.
