Nowadays, governments are offering morefinancial support for advanced education than they have ever been before,allowing universities to provide their students with more help. Given theincreasing fierce competition in job hunting, universities faculties areseeking a proper way to prepare their students for the future. Some peoplepropose that offering more courses for students can prepare students well fortheir future work. I cannot agree them anymore.
Admittedly, taking more courses in the lastyear of the university will definitely burden the students. Not only will thosecourses take students more time in the class but more energy in preparing newlessons and reviewing old ones as well. Besides, a large number of lessons mayalso bring students great pressure. Nevertheless, in comparison with a solidfoundation in professional skills and more options in choosing favoritecourses, these seem to be secondary.
To have more compulsory courses, collegestudents might lay a solid foundation for future career. Compulsory courses arenecessarily required to specialize in a certain major and are also theprerequisite to gain a position in a given field. Those who have taken morerequired courses will, if they attend the class seriously, perform better inthe job interview and thus are more likely to have a good start in their futurecareer. Taking hiring principles of Baidu company as an example, the directorof human resources in Baidu once said, “Search department in Baidu only hirethose who master the knowledge of Algorithm Design and Data Structure.”However, these two classes are only available to postgraduates in myuniversity, for the limitation of fewteachers. Therefore, students have less chances to pass the interview of searchdepartment in Baidu than those who are accessible to these courses.
Meanwhile, more elective courses allowuniversity students greater chance to choose their favorite ones. In other words,with more classes available, it will be much easier for students to find acourse they are interested in and thus they could acquire knowledge more efficiently.After several years’ study, they will definitely be more well-prepared to starta new work than those who have less chances to select courses they areinterested in.
To sum up, although we have to bear heavyburden and pressures of numerous courses, we also benefit from the solidfoundation and more choices of courses they bring. If we can overcome thedifficulty of taking many courses, a successful career and a bright future isright in front of us.
