Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? The purpose of television should be all educative, not entertaining.

Television is pretty common in modern families. Watching Television even has become people’s daily routine. Television is so influential that someone suggest all the television shows should be educative, not entertaining.  Although people who hold this position think it will lead our society to a better place, I strongly disagree with this statement based on my own observation.

To begin with, it is a basic need for people to be entertained. After working or studying for a whole day, they need some entertainment to refresh themselves, thus, they can happily get down to their work again. A recent survey conducted by Princeton University suggests that people’s work efficiency would drop drastically after working for five consecutive hours. But their efficiency rises back to the original level quickly, if they take a break to do some entertainment. So, those funny television programs are of great help for people who want to better engage on their work again. In fact, the reason why television is so popular today is its ability to entertain people. People embraced this new invention because it provided a way for entertainment that has never been found before. If television only serves as a tool for education, it probably would not be as influential as it is today.

Moreover, some entertaining television programs can inspire people, providing a platform for people to express themselves. Before television is invented, there was no way for some professionals to show their talent to the broad masses, not to mention ordinary people. But today, talent shows like “American Idols”, “America Talent Show” not only make it possible for people who have real talent to gain fame, but also offer a chance to grass-root people to performance in front of the whole nation. This in turn inspires more people, not matter vocational or avocational, to insist on their dreams, be faithful to life.

Admittedly, using television for educative purpose bears some advantages. For example, people gain fundamental knowledge about science and history through educational television channels such as Discovery channel, History channel. But it is not efficient, compared to other ways of learning, since people who study in front of the television are easily distracted, and people have less freedom choosing time and contents they want to learn.

In conclusion, television has to serve entertaining purpose, because people need entertainment, and some entertainment shows inspire people to work harder and to be faithful to life. Though education television programs bring beneficial impact on people’s knowledge, it not necessarily means that television should be all educative.
