The world has witnessed a lot of change in the last few decades. The number of people who take history in University becomes less than decade years before. Now, when it comes to whether universities should require all students to take history courses no matter what field they study is, people's opinions differ from person to person. Some people think it should not be required, students need to spend more time on their study fields. Some people think it should be required because history courses can let students know more about the world and their country. However, in the ultimate analysis, I think all university students should be required to take history courses.. From 1point 3acres bbs
First of all, history courses can let people know more about the world and open one's mind. One can learn what happened in the past of one's home country and other countries, learn to compare history things with today's things. Take my experience for example, when I was a college student, I took a Chinese history class. Before taking the class, I didn't know anything about China. The only thing I knew is that China has a long history. During the course, the professor talked about the Chinese culture that started at 5000 years ago, there are more than 15 dynasties in Chinese history. And there are many important inventions in ancient China, such as paper and fire powder. The Yellow River and the Chang Jiang River are important for Chinese culture, many people lived near the two rivers. I also knew that Japan attacked China at the world war two, Chinese people suffered a lot during that time. After taking the Chinese history course, I learned a lot about Chinese history. If I didn't take that course, I will not get the knowledge.
Second, taking the history course provides a new way of finding their interest. Many students who are not major in history may fall in love with history and change their major after taking history courses. For these ones, history is their real interest. Take my friend Bob as an example, in the first year of his college study, he studied computer science. In the second year, he took a history course for interest. However, after taking the history course, he fell in love with history. Then, he changed his major from computer science to history major. Now, he is happy every day because he finds his interest. We can draw the conclusion from this example that the university should require all student to take history courses.
Indeed, university students need enough time for studying knowledge of their major, thus why someones think students should not be required to take history class. However, history class will not cost much time of students, the workload is much less most time. So, it's very beneficial for students to take history class.
All in all, from what we have discussed, we can safely draw the conclusion that the university should require all students to take history course. |
