Some comments on Purdue's Machine Learning

If you wish to do machine learning. I recommend you apply a degree of Computer Sciences. However, due to the lack of your programming skills, I think the joint degree of statistics and computer science(http://www.cs.purdue.edu/academi ... tatistics_cs.sxhtml) may be a better choice for you.

Most of statisticians pay more attention to the models rather than algorithms. However, computation tools are good for statisticians to deal with large data. If you are really interested in the field of machine learning, I think you need learn more computer sciences stuffs(data structure, algorithms), optimization stuffs(numerical analysis, numerical linear algebra), and some statistical simulation methods(EM, MCMC, etc). If you think you are interested in the development of algorithms to improve time effiency or accuracy in dealing with some kind of data(usually should be large data or high dimensional data), statistical machine learning will fit you well. The difference between computer scientists and statisticians is CS people usually develop an algorithm to solve a kind of data or problems but statisticians will theoretically(or do some carefully simulation) prove an improvement of a novel algorithm and it can be apply to a kind of data or problems.

It is still too early for you to think about your research area. I think it is not bad to point out what you want to learn in your graduate study. You may change it anytime when you enroll into a graduate program.、

xinrong: 我明白你的意思了，但是我的兴趣还是在统计上，我知道模型和数据处理是统计的关键，我之所以说我想学这个方向是因为我以为这个方向会比较注重计算机的编程，这个我想对统计也是比较重要的技能。

我想知道的是申请普渡的统计，在主页里看到好几个方向像计算金融和ML，这个是录取之后随即分配的呢，还是怎么样？求解答 啊~~~

在large data越来越多的现在，computing肯定会越来越重要

我们系除了CF以外，进来都是随便选课找出口毕业。。其实我觉得包括CF出口都差不多，就是个统计的master

请教版主，我也对P大的stat MS很感兴趣，不过估计是送申请费了。
本科数学系统计方向，包括实变等专业课都学过。同时SAS,R,MATLAB，SQL,C++这些可能相关的编程都学过，但除了编程对CS一无所知。
因为个人有点geek,觉得互联网企业会更适合一点，不知道更适合这个还是stat的data mining, machine learning.

听说purdue很适合继续读PHD，那您觉得这个双学位的适不适合为PHD铺路呢？有点担心双学位略水....

原来Purdue还有这项目，对于很多计算机出身的应该蛮合适的
不过只有MS，好像读的时间蛮长的，也不知道工作好不好找

still a cs degree. If you wanna achieve a cs degree, avoid this. But if you are a statistician, go with it.

你要这么修就不会修太多统计的理论课，对找phd还是有难度的

计算机不需要那么多的统计理论，而且你也可以积累足够多的project

问题就是。。何必要phd

可以变方向，无所谓的

你可以先看看DM,ML的书确定一下是不是对这些感兴趣

是这样，目前申了master转PHD的想法还是比较坚定的，因为总觉得想要做到高精尖还是得把本事练牛逼了，尤其是亚洲人在美国。。。只是我对于应用比较感兴趣，stat master之后申stat PHD还是CSmachine learning方向的PHD还不是那么确定.....要是版主方便的话还请帮忙出出主意哈！这是我的定位贴~http://www.1point3acres.com/bbs/thread-42246-1-1.html
