我的问题:
I'm currently a junior at University of Pittsburgh and majored in Chemistry. I'm interested in applying for the Biostatistics master degree of Theory and Method in Columbia University. I have a question about the requirement for GPA and GRE. My GRE score is 311 (150 for the verbal section and 161 for the quantitative reasoning section) and my overall GPA is 3.6. I'm not sure if my GPA and GRE are competitive enough to apply for it.
小秘的回答:
I am glad to hear about your interest in our MS in Theory and Methods.  Your GRE and GPA are very good but we consider the entire application, not just grades and test scores. I always encourage applicants to get strong academic recommendations, particularly from instructors in the math/quantitative field.

我的问题1:
(1)评奖学金的制度。。回答得出的结论是：第一年只有TA，而且是录取委员会统一评，也就说这是属于强录取委员会。
(2)录取了PhD之后，不存在转master的可能。这个真心坑爹。
小秘的邮件回复:
The faculty admissions committee is currently working on
making first round choices for teaching assistantships.
In our department, research assistantships are generally
reserved for students who have reached doctoral candidacy
level (after coursework is complete -- usually 3-4 semesters).
Teaching assistantships are for students in their first two
years of study (while taking coursework).  Individual faculty
make decisions concerning their own research funding.

We hope to have all first round decisions completed by
mid-March -- not later than April 1.

我又问：Thank you very much. You mean the TAship is also made by individual faculties? Or made by the CS department?

小秘回答：There is a faculty committee that makes the TA decisions.
We are currently on Spring break and will return to classes
on March 11.

问题2：遵守4/15协议的学校名单，见附件，美国的学校基本上都遵守4/15协议，注意：加拿大除了UT/UBC之外，很多学校是不遵守4/15协议的。。是属于跟小秘交流问题时，她主动发给我的。这个学校小秘确实nice。

小秘的回信：

I've also attached a copy of the resolution concerning
binding due dates for TAships in the USA/Canada.  You
will see how many schools do abide by this resolution
and the universal April 15 date.  In your email you imply
a due date that is earlier than April 15 for these other
schools.  If you find you need more time to decide, please
feel free to ask them about this resolution.  Some schools
choose not to tell their students about this important
information.  This can make the process unfair to both
the student (being asked to sign an early commitment)
and to some schools (who have fewer staff to process
applications).
