Two PhD student  positions  with full financial  support  are available  beginning  Spring  2013  or Fall  2013  (or  later  until  filled)  in the  Department  of  Civil  & Environmental   Engineering  at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey. The financial support package includes full tuition waive, benefits, and competitive stipend. Rutgers University is located at a dynamic, beautiful, and vibrant urban area with easy access to major cities including New York and Philadelphia. The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering is the home to the Center of Advanced Infrastructure and Transportation, a national Tier I research center, and the U.S. Long-Term Bridge Performance (LTBP) program.

The admitted students will pursue Ph.D. degrees in Civil Engineering with a special focus on construction engineering and management. The students are expected to work with Dr. Jie Gong in the general field of intelligent sensing and computing methods for data collection, information retrieval, and knowledge discovery from the complex and interrelated infrastructure, environmental, and social systems.  Potential research topics include pattern recognition and data mining in remote sensing for transportation infrastructure condition monitoring, intelligent construction production system, infrastructure data modeling and visualization, automated construction quality control methods, and intelligent building energy audit and analysis methods. The advisor will guide the student to identify a research topic most suitable to the student's academic interests and background.


MINIMUM  REQUIREMENTS: B.S. in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or related fields, other general admission requirements of Rutgers (TOEFL, ORE, GPA, etc.) please refer togradstudy.rutgers.edu

DESIRABLE  QUALIFICATIONS: Experiences related to one or more of the following areas: 1) Building, bridge, and highway construction; 2) Building information modeling; 3) Building energy simulation; 4) Programming skill in one or more of the following languages (C/C++, Java, Javascript, Python, Ruby, Matlab); 5) Computer vision; 6) Development experience on Android/iOS systems; 7) GIS; 8) Wireless sensing; 9) Visual Sensing (vision sensors and LiDAR); and 10) Probability and stochastic process.
