请各位NEU东北大学的MASTER过来看一下

有申请到NEU的MASTER的孩子们过来看一下，现在收到的AD基本分为两种（不是所有专业，我是EE，大概以EE为主），一种是course only track， 一种是thesis based track。很多人问了他们之间的不同，我也和很多同学一起询问过，但貌似这是东北第一年实行这个政策，所以很多东西都没有明确在官网上标明，已经在NEU的学长学姐也不太了解。最近一段时间，我和东北那边发了几封邮件，并得到了一些答复，我把大概的答复内容粘贴如下：

邮件一：
我：
Dear Officer,

Thanks for your email and giving me the opportunity of learning in your esteemed university.

I am so excited to hear the news. However, in my admission letter, it's course-only track.


Could I ask the difference between thesis track and course-only track?

Is it possible for me to apply for the PHD degree directly after I acquire the Master of science(course-only

track?) Or can I transfer to Master of science (thesis-based) after I enter your school?

Thanks for your kind help, which really means a lot.

Dear Students Accepted  Master's Course track for fall 2013:

In general the main source of financial aid is research assistantships—you may contact faculty in your area of research interest/expertise but some faculty will not have funding available for new students in fall 2013.  RA funding is always competitive and limited and usually goes to Ph.D candidates first.  We do not offer other forms of financial assistance at this time.

You can petition to change to master's with thesis track at the end of fall 2013 with the support of a faculty member who has agreed to be your research advisor for the thesis.  Otherwise you will complete the master's with course work only.

Usually the Ph.D track requires students to have completed a master’s thesis track to be competitive for admission to the Ph.D

1. Are there any differences between master's with thesis and master's with course only? Except that Master's with course only can't go on learning and get a Ph.D.


2. Are there any requirements I need to meet before I petition to change to master's with thesis? For example, do I need to get a high GPA or somethins like that? And is it easy for students to get support of a faculty member and change to master's with thesis track?

No it’s not easy to switch from course track to thesis track.  You must locate a committed faculty advisor during fall 2013 or spring 2014 semesters and then a formal petition must be filed.  There will also be GPA requirement. Master’s with course only is designed for those who want to go into industry—not for a Ph.D Faith

其中那边的意思大概是：
1. course only是为了参加工作的学生准备的，是不能继续读博的；
2. course only可以申请转为thesis based track，但是会比较困难；
3. course only转为thesis based 需要在2013年fall和2014的sprint提交申请，然后找到一个愿意带你的教授，并且GPA要达到一定的标准，这样才能成功转成thesis based track.（但具体GPA要达到什么标准，如何找到愿意带的老师等等，都还不太清楚）
4. 据我个人了解，有相当一部分拿到thesis based track或者PhD的同学，在最后会选择做一个project，拿course only的MASTER毕业，而不是做thesis based。但具体的信息我还是不能十分肯定。


目前只获取到如上的信息，现在还在发邮件跟进，但邮件交流会比较慢，所以准备近期直接打电话去咨询。如果大家对于这个问题还有疑问，也请继续补充。

LZ  你的admission letter是网申系统里的那个decision？还是你已经accept  offer之后 他们给你发的？所有的人都是course-based？我怎么没看到我是什么

网申系统里的decision啊！打开那个PDF文件时，里面那么写的。course only track……

弱弱地问下。。。。所谓不能继续读博是神马意思。。。。。比如我毕业了，自己再想现在申请master一样，交申请费，陶瓷，网申本校或其他学校的phd。。。这都不可以？

就是这个master相当于是final degree。如果要读博的话，要重新读一个thesis based master再申请，继续读五年. 而不能拿已经取得的course only master继续申请三年博士

没有啊，就在交定金的那条通知上面有一条通知。
