In mid-March, with the outbreak of the coronavirus epidemic, many began to do the same thing, stocking toilet paper! But there were also a group of people who did not participate in hoarding toilet paper at all. Researchers from Germany surveyed 966 volunteers from 22 countries, including the U.S.. Participants were asked to fill out a psychological questionnaire, provide demographic information, and details about purchasing toilet paper in the last week of March. The survey is investigating whether the stock of toilet paper is related to different personality traits. In the end, it was found that people who hoard goods often feel more anxious and fearful about the upcoming health threats. When the researchers analyzed the data of this group of people, they found that the more afraid of the new crown epidemic, the more things they hoarded, and this part of the people are often more prone to anxiety, panic, sentimentalism, and perfectionism.
So although the stockpiling behavior looks particularly selfish, it may be that anxiety affects the behavior. Because of the outbreak, many things can not be controlled, hoarding goods may bring a sense of control to anxious people, and anxiety may also be a powerful force. If you are super anxious, your brain may be hijacked by this fear , So those who hoard goods will not consider the social impact. And we shouldn’t be too dissatisfied with stockists. Taking a step back, this behavior comes from their fear. source
