Generally speaking, I am of the opinion that both the ability to maintain friendships with a small number of people over a long period and the ability to make new friends easily are all indispensable and people can possess these two abilities altogether.
In the first place, it is essential to maintain friendships with a small number of people over a long time. I have several old friends and I can recall a lot of valuable memories. They were there when I first gave a class presentation; they were there when I first took part in a basketball game; they were there when I first entered university and they were still there when I went through a heartbreak. We have numerous shared experienced and we can listen to each other's issues, comfort each other and encourage each other. This in turn provides us with a platform to relax ourselves and regain energy, which can lead us to happiness. Therefore, the ability to keep a tie with old friends is crucial.
In addition to the importance of maintaining long-term friendships, it is also vital for happiness to know how to make new friends easily. In this modern society, the social circle is very important for a person's promotion. I totally agree with this. In my university days, I may take classes, conduct experiments, join student clubs, etc. In this case, making new friends can help me learn knowledge better by exchanging ideas about subject matters, do research efficiently by obtaining related experience and have a good day by having fun with a lot of people. Hence, making new friends can assist us to find a better version of ourselves, and thus the ability to make new friends easily is essential.
By way of conclusion, based on arguments explored above, I have a strong belief that it is not fair to downplay the value of either long-term friendships or new friendships. In other words, we can benefit a lot from both of them and we can actually have the ability to develop both of them since there is no conflict between these two abilities.
