今天刚写的初稿,求各位帮忙修改一下了。。谢谢~
“The real happiness comes from constructive work.” Those words from Bertrand Russell were rooted deeply in my mind the first time I read when I was a freshman majoring in Law. I was frustrated at that time. Although I worked hard in Law School and even got the highest GPA among students on the last semester, the things I learnt brought a little happiness to me. Sometimes I sit alone, wondering what I want, and until one night, I happened to see a ROBOCUP (Robot World Cup) competition held in my school. Even though I knew nothing about the competition, the scene that robots running on the ground, trying to kick the football and competitors involving in the game with their faces shining impressed me a lot. Like a flash, I know what I want, working on Robotic seems irresistible to me.
After making this decision, I began to prepare for changing my major from law to mechanical engineering and automation. Driven by the strong desire, I learnt the Higher Mathematics and Physics all by myself, and often spend several hours solving equations without noticing that I was the only one left in the classroom. Things went hard at the first, while I never feel confused or tired during this time. I could clearly feel every solid step I took in the pursuit of my dream. Eventually my constant effort paid back, among the ten quotas provided, I was the only student changing from Law School to Engineering School at the year of freshman.
Filled with joy and gratitude for finding the correct major, I do treasure the opportunity a lot. The pure curiosity and interest of knowledge often bring me excitement and joy. I managed to take all the curriculums within three years, and even got a good overall GPA, as high as 3.68/4, ranking the top 1 among 100 students.
Besides treasuring the chance of learning engineering knowledge, being an engineering student, I always ask myself how to apply what I learnt from class to real-world engineering problems. When I was a sophomore, I toke a part-time job to teach a kid math, sooner I knew that his father owns a mechanical company and was finding someone to design a machine used for transporting metallic films. After considerable think, I sincerely extended my willing to the kid’s father to design the mechanical part of the machine. He trusted me and gave me this project which worth¥130,000. To a sophomore, no need to say how hard this project is, I asked one of my friends to help me, and we spent two months in the library searching for references and discussing the best design to meet the demands. Throughout the whole processing, we are tired but excited. I still remember several days after I sent my drawing sheets to the company, the kid’s father drove me to his company, and showed me the real machine I designed. The machine runs with my heart beats, and that was the first time I do realized the words: the real happiness comes from constructive work.
Later on, I lead a group to complete the Mechanical Innovation Design Competition. Considering the inertia when nurses inject some micro-scale medicines to patients, we decided to design a high accurate, auto controlled injector. The idea is novel so that we have to prepare everything for it. In the next two months, we were engaging in a lot of things, from selecting the suitable motor or pressure transmitter to designing the geometry construction of the injector, from coding the C program to drawing the PCB sheet, from writing the user-guide to making the demonstrating materials. Although we only get the third prize in the competition, I was really proud of my teammates and myself, because we all knew how hard we worked and how much we learnt, and what matters most, we successfully converted an idea to a real functional injector.
At the same year, I joined a group for the “xPartner cup” China Intelligent Robot Competition, it was a 2 VS 2 robot football game, robots running in a ground surrounded by walls, one robot for attack, the other one for defense. What we need to do was coding programs for the two robots, using different algorithms to simulate the behaviors like shoot, dribble or interception. In the next month, I devoted myself in the laboratory, learning from the very beginning such as how to get data from sensors, to coding the key algorithms of the projects. To make our robots more competitive, our group discussed a lot like the path to attack, the parameters of speed and direction, we were exhausted coding and debugging the programs because a minor mistake would bring about a breakdown. After trials and errors, we finally decided the best parameters and the best way to attack i.e. instead of running in the middle of the ground, our robot dribble the football near the wall, with the help of the wall, our robot can easily control the football and run far enough to make threatening shoots. The first prize of the national competition was the best award for our meticulous works.. 1point 3acres
The rewarding experience of the competition gave me a lot of confidence working on robotic, and I eventually decided to work on TurletBot, a movable platform with Microsoft Kinect (a RGB-D sensor) as my Bachelor’s thesis. Although I had no idea about ROS (Robotic Operation System) at first, the novelty intrigued me deeply. My thesis was trying to apply 2D + 3D face recognition on using skeleton to control TurtleBot. Due to I have to make clear things like ROS, face recognition, skeleton tracking and the data exchange between them, I must admit it was hard. But the more painstaking setbacks, the stronger desire to overcome. Finally I successfully achieved the original plan, and I have submitted a paper of my work to IRCA, 2014 which will notice the paper and video acceptance on January 6, 2014(这句话是想说现在还不知道能不能发表,只是投了稿,但是会不会错误的理解成一定会发表啊?还有这句话要不要呢?).
In retrospect, from the beginning that I stood in the crowds, knowing nothing about robot but just intrigued in its novelty to knick the football, to the amazing situation that I can even control a robot by my skeleton, I am full of joy and also curiosity. I’m sure that it’s still very exciting to know more about robotic. To achieve this goal, I intend to pursue my master studies and focus on mechatronics with full consideration of my interests and strengths. Now I am a graduate freshman in Shanghai Jiao Tong University, however I do admire the great reputation in the studies of mechatronics of XXX University. I know that if I gave up changing my major four years ago, I would never feel so happy now, and if I gave up applying for XXX University just because I am already a graduate freshman, I would be very regretful soon. More importantly, some professors, like XXX, have undertaken cutting-edge research in similar topics. I believe I will reach my goal and become an outstanding researcher in mechatronics by studying there. I will consider my admission to XXX University as not only a great honor, but also a responsibility to go on my research career.(我的申请原因是放在最后说的,因为是由于前面所介绍的事情的影响,不知道这样的放置顺序会不会不好?)
