This is what I learned from my current job search process:.1point3acres
🙂 Early and Mid Stage startups are still hiring. This was a refreshing surprise. There is capital flowing to these companies, and they are still in demand for talent. These companies are more disciplined in hiring than in earlier years, and lots of them are going to get a treat by hiring amazing talent that is in the market right now.
😀 Starting your own company. This is a beautiful time to start a company. There is ample funding for seed rounds and ample talent available. If you have the risk tolerance and the balls to start your own company (I don’t), then you should seriously consider this path. Seattle is becoming the Supply Chain Tech Mecca (Convoy, Flex, Shipium, Flexport Seattle, etc), and I am convinced that the Convoy Mafia will strengthen the ecosystem.
🤔 Traditional companies. This is the dark horse of current recruiting processes. Traditional companies are looking to invest more in tech, and they crave having folks that have been deep in the tech world. These companies would kill to have folks with not only tech but supply chain tech experience. My prediction is that a lot of the excess talent that Big Tech is shedding will go to strengthen the tech teams in traditional companies. Excellent opportunities for interesting income (shockingly not as high as Big Tech) but a slower pace.
😫 Big Tech is frozen right now. I wouldn’t put energy into pursuing BigTech opportunities unless you have a direct connection with the HM and can filter BS out. Big Tech fundamentals are strong and this is a transient minor correction to the massive hiring that has happened in the past 3 years. Big Tech will eventually go back to hiring but not in the short term.
🙁 Late Stage Tech is being challenged. Very late-stage companies are struggling because there is more pressure from capital markets to get to healthy unit economics earlier. In general, these companies are going through adjustments and shrinking more than growing. If you are lucky to find a late-stage company that is still hiring, audit its numbers and make sure that it's in a healthy and resilient biz position. |
