I strongly support the proposal for the following reasons:

1. The extension would enable more global talents to make contribution to the U.S. industries. And the U.S should keep attracting the smartest people in the world. The U.S. would be less attractive without this extension, which could mean a great loss of talented minds.

2. Without the extension, a lot of recent foreign graduates working at the U.S. companies will be forced to pack their stuff and return to their countries, which would be a huge disaster for many domestic companies. Furthermore, it would also cause big problems for these foreign families living in states because they lose their income source.

I support the OPT extension 100%! I found some U.S. citizens immediately reject the extension even before they understand it. Here's one simple example I found:

"Living in San Diego and have an 18 yo son who still cannot find an entry level job anywhere. he has even applied to fast food chains despite feeling uncomfortable working there because he was the only non-hispanic english -speaking youth. Now looking for over 13 months. As a result of the constant rejection he has become quit hopeless and depressed. He is a good kid with morals, polite, well-spoken, integrity, clean-cut, and with good grades. He is giving up because he just does not know what to do anymore to get a break."

I just want to say your 18 year-old son couldn't find a job almost has nothing to do with international students who need OPT extension. They are the students graduating from STEM and working for high-tech companies basically. Actually I think you should not blame the students who need OPT extension but all those Mexican illegals.

I STRONGLY support this new OPT extension rule.

I'm an international master student major in Computer Science. I am currently an intern at a IT Company as a Java Software Developer.
There are many countries I can choose to pursue my master degree other than US. The reason I choose US is the industry training opportunities after graduation, which is a great benefit for me. The training helps me to convert all the skills I learn from school into real productive experience.
Without this OPT extension rule, I can't believe US could still attract so many foreign STEM talents every year to contribute their knowledge to this country and I probably would choose to study in other countries with better policy to foreign STEM talents. This is a huge loss to the US universities and schools because international students pay higher tuition fees which becomes a main income of many universities and schools.

I think that 12 months regular + 24 months extension time is also a good length for OPT program. Based on my current work experience, it takes almost 6 month to get familiar with company development platform before the employee become productive and efficient. Also, many company projects usually takes up to 1 year to complete. If the OPT extension time is too short, foreign STEM workers would lose their VISA before completion of company projects. It cause a huge lose to the company.

As a Chinese STEM student, I would return back China eventually. Before then, I'd like to apply my knowledge learned from US university to US high-tech industry development. If I have about 3 years work experience in US, I would be competitive in the job market of China. That's why this new OPT rule would benefit both US high-tech industry and international STEM talents.

Hope more people support this excellent rule!

The OPT program as a good training program aids vast attraction to international students for coming to US to accomplish their college study. According to the Department of Commerce 2014, the international students contribute 27 billion dollars to the US economy in a single year, which is equivalent to the market value of Yahoo! For a four-year period, this group of people contribute around 110 billion dollars to the economy, which is more than half market value of Warmart, twice of Target and thrice of Adobe. Just thinking about how many jobs can be added if we have another two companies like Target? You cannot simply ignore it. Furthermore, this number is increasing because of the OPT extension policy. Banning OPT extension is an unwise action, which will certainly lower the attraction of US education system and further reduce the economic contribution from this high-increasing, long-standing group of people. Trading 4 billion dollar loss in tax to exchange for 110 billion gain in the economy is a good deal. I believe everyone will make the correct calculation. So I agree with the OPT extension policy.

I strongly support the OPT extension! It's this country, United State, that benefits from this policy. International graduates were trained in US academic institutions, and they are contributing to the US economy in leading STEM fields. It is the important part that helps United States remain competitive globally. The STEM field has created more jobs than ever.

Most negative comments here are very narrow-minded. Why would any Citizen against for the extension if he/she believes in his/her abilities, potential, skills and creativities? Every employer wants to employ the best students, regardless of citizen or non-citizen. Those negative comments assume that they are guaranteed to get a job even if themselves are less competitive. This is harmful to the development of US economy. A healthy economy will create more job opportunities. This is a win-win game for both citizens and international students. Citizens would work harder to become more competitive. And they have more advantages than international students, such as communication skills. One of the most important reasons international students choose US is that they believe US is a free and open-minded country. People here believe their American dreams that it's their abilities that give them good lives, not their citizenships. Let's work together to make US a even stronger country in the world.
