托福成绩必须在入学前2年以内方才有效。是研院要求，系里没有权利录取用老分的学生，强申会被卡。内牛满面了当时。要提早考啊。。。据说3月就木有funding了。。。

你问的问题：I took my toefl test in April 23, 2011. can I use the score to apply for 13fall Ph.D. program?
My score is 112 (Listening 30, Reading 30, Speaking 23, Writing 29)

小秘的回答：The Graduate Studies site indicates:

Receipt of official copy (not student's copy) of applicant's proficiency scores achieved not more than two years prior to the semester of admission.

Since your 4/23/11 TOEFL test scores will be valid only through 4/23/13, the TOEFL exam would needs to be retaken for scores to be valid for the fall 2013 semester.
Since TOEFL scores are a University requirement rather than a Department requirement, CPE is not allowed to make a decision based on the old TOEFL scores.  There most likely will not be any funding opportunities left by March, but if you are providing your own funding, then a decision could still be made in March 2013.

一般而言国际生只能申请MS。我强申了PHD，因为木有paper，被降级为MS录取，RA据说有希望，但是我估计去不了了……
注意，UGA的网申系统没有地方传SOP和CV。这个系是直接发给这位教授小米的。其他系的情况未知，大家多问问。
还有！这个学校比较奇葩，是要额外填写assistantships申请的，不过申请内容和网申大同小异，大家copy即可。。。

你问的问题：Can I apply for a Ph.D. program without a M.S. degree?
小秘的回答：We normally bring international students without an MS degree into the program at the MS level. If things go well (e.g., you are leader in a patent or in publishing a paper), we can enable a seamless transfer to the PhD program.

All we need to have direct from you are the following documents: Vita and statement of purpose. They may be emailed to me at btollner@engr.uga.edu.
The on-line graduate application with transcripts, scores and references will make their way to us via the graduate school. The on-line assistantship comes directly to us.

I'm currently a junior at University of Pittsburgh and majored in Chemistry. I'm interested in applying for the master degree of Biostatistics in Duke University. I have a question about the requirement for GPA and GRE. My GRE score is 311 (150 for the verbal section and 161 for the quantitative reasoning section) and my overall GPA is 3.6. I'm not sure if my GPA and GRE are competitive enough to apply for the master degree of Biostatistics in Duke University.

小秘的回答:
Our admissions process is evolving as we learn which types of students tend to be most successful in our program, so we don’t presently use hard and fast numeric cut-offs.  In general, some of the most important things that we’re looking for as we review an application are (1) mathematical training (probably the most important thing) – for example, good grades in at least 2-3 calculus courses, hopefully with linear algebra and perhaps other courses as well; (2) communication skills – for example, as apparent in the essays, as noted in letters of recommendation; (3) problem-solving skills; (4) initiative – as apparent in the applicant’s career to date, including GPA; and (5) biological training – this isn’t a necessity, but is a positive feature when present.  Without looking at your transcript and knowing which grades match to which courses, and overall GPA of 3.5 doesn’t raise any red flags.  It isn’t necessary exceptional, and so you wouldn’t get the additional consideration that something closer to a 4.0 might merit, but it is solid and certainly wouldn’t disqualify you.

小秘的回答:
I am glad to hear about your interest in our MS in Theory and Methods.  Your GRE and GPA are very good but we consider the entire application, not just grades and test scores. I always encourage applicants to get strong academic recommendations, particularly from instructors in the math/quantitative field.

我的问题1:
(1)评奖学金的制度。。回答得出的结论是：第一年只有TA，而且是录取委员会统一评，也就说这是属于强录取委员会。
(2)录取了PhD之后，不存在转master的可能。这个真心坑爹。

The faculty admissions committee is currently working on
making first round choices for teaching assistantships.
In our department, research assistantships are generally
reserved for students who have reached doctoral candidacy
level (after coursework is complete -- usually 3-4 semesters).
Teaching assistantships are for students in their first two
years of study (while taking coursework).  Individual faculty
make decisions concerning their own research funding.

We hope to have all first round decisions completed by
mid-March -- not later than April 1.

我又问：Thank you very much. You mean the TAship is also made by individual faculties? Or made by the CS department?

小秘回答：There is a faculty committee that makes the TA decisions.
We are currently on Spring break and will return to classes
on March 11.

问题2：遵守4/15协议的学校名单，见附件，美国的学校基本上都遵守4/15协议，注意：加拿大除了UT/UBC之外，很多学校是不遵守4/15协议的。。是属于跟小秘交流问题时，她主动发给我的。这个学校小秘确实nice。

小秘的回信：

I've also attached a copy of the resolution concerning
binding due dates for TAships in the USA/Canada.  You
will see how many schools do abide by this resolution
and the universal April 15 date.  In your email you imply
. From 1point 3acres bbsa due date that is earlier than April 15 for these other
schools.  If you find you need more time to decide, please
feel free to ask them about this resolution.  Some schools
choose not to tell their students about this important
information.  This can make the process unfair to both
the student (being asked to sign an early commitment)
and to some schools (who have fewer staff to process
applications).
