On May 8th the Labour Department reported that 20.5m non-farm workers lost their jobs in April, including 980,000 government workers. Of these, 801,000 are local government employees. Although the Labor Department report does not release that figure, 469,000 of the 801,000 local government workers are k-12 teachers and other school workers, labor Department economists told Reuters. School districts in poor areas have been hardest hit. An April paper from the Brookings Institution predicted that layoffs would be the worst for high-poverty schools. As more and more students fall into poverty, but as their parents and guardians lose their jobs, these students need more schooling. Several school district administrators, public officials and teaching experts warn that current job losses will continue for years, damaging the education of a generation of American students. source
