Television is everywhere innowadays society. Thanks to the rapid development of electronics andcommunication technology, various programs of high quality are delivered to peoplethough televisions. When it comes to the debate that whether the major purposeof television is to educate or entertain, people hold different points of view.As far as I am concerned, I deem that the television is created forentertainment. Programs of television should be catered to massive kinds ofrequirements of the public.

Various people have their own special flavors ofchannels on television. Some people may like to watch movies of sciencefiction, others may prefer comics channels. News, series of television, music videos,education programs, and lots of other forms of television programs are providedto fulfill the needs of the public. No one could deny that if most of channelsare oriented for education, television stations will break down sooner or later.Because only few people who prefer watching education programs are fulfilled,and majority of people are disappointed to face with only these programs whichare boring for them. If television stations are going bankrupt, how can thesechannels survive and not to mention creating more education programs for thepublic.

Entertainment which brings the masses withhappiness and relaxation is the main purpose of television. Image that when oneis home after a day's hard work or study, opens the television and finds thatthere are full of programs of education and only few channels of entertainment,what will he or she do? Actually, most individuals will get more pressure inthis situation. More entertainment programs on television are demanded and cannot be obviated.

Admittedly, education programs on television canbring people more information and knowledge; it is not appropriate to assumethat television is created for education. Whereas schools, colleges oruniversities, and some other institutions of education are regular places forindividuals to absorb knowledge. Besides, some information acquired fromtelevisions is wrong and might even lead the public to behave improperly. Inlight of this, it might just as well to provide people with more channels ofentertainment.

In summary, the main purpose of television is toentertain the masses while not to educate them. Both the public and thetelevision station will benefit from television which is oriented forentertainment.

This is because only a few people would be fulfilled with just watching education programs are fulfilled, whereas the majority would be bored by the lack of variety. If television stations are going bankrupt, how can the channels survive and not to mention create more education programs for the public.

这里LZ的逻辑前提是电视台必须有大众收看率影响的收入才能营业。可是这并不能排除如果电视的目的真的是为了教育，为什么不能让如政府运营的公益电视台作为电视播放的主体，那些台上以播放教育节目为主。收入对它们的收看率来讲并不受影响。常言道“良药苦口”，为了公益目的政府可以指使电视节目不必顺于大众需求。楼主可以考虑在这一点上应该怎样辩驳。

Entertainment that brings the masses with happiness and relaxation should be the main purpose of television. Imagine that when one is home after a day's hard work or study, opens the television and finds that it is full of educational programs and only a few entertainment channels, what will he or she do? In light of this, it might be just as well to provide people with more channels of entertainment. 这里LZ虽说了电视有时提供错误性息，但好像就默认了如果是娱乐节目的话其中的错误和误导就没有任何影响。教育节目中可能有错并不能直接推理到就应该提供更多的娱乐节目。

In summary, the main purpose of television is to entertain the masses and not to educate them. Both the public and the television station will benefit from programming that is(或写programs that are) oriented for entertainment.

楼主好像特别喜欢用名词-of-名词组词方式，可是要注意有时这并不是英语中最自然或最常用的写法。如"science fiction movies"、"educational programs"和"entertainment channels"都是很自然的词组，但"movies of science fiction"、"programs of education"和"channels of entertainment"就很生涩。
