丰富的精神世界是a strong line of defense against the wears and tears of life.
Full Circle: A Memoir of Leaning in Too Far and the Journey Back by Erin Callan:作者是雷曼前CFO,(formerly) one of the most powerful women on Wall St。 她甚至一度婚恋都要optimise for work(Erin形容自己的老公是the perfect corporate husband)。
Tough Choices by Carly Fiorina,
I made a decision. I would not cry again over others' prejudice...I came close to crying during the proxy battle at Hewlett-Packard, and closer still when I left HP, but since 1986 I have saved my tears for more important things: my family, the beauty of nature, Beethoven, a dear friend, the goodness of people, their wisdom, their tragedies...
Boundaries : Where You End and I Begin: How To Recognize and Set Healthy Boundaries by Anne Katherine
Wasted : A Memoir of Anorexia and Bulimia by Marya Hornbacher 很黑暗的一本书,但是我觉得它写出了厌食症/身材焦虑的本质:大家obsess的不是身材,而是a vision of perfection。“只要我有了XX就完美了”的那个XX可以是身材,是学历,是薪水...越早意识到这个XX不存在就越能早日解脱。少女时期深受厌食症困扰的作者如此描写她的vision,我想很多女生都可以relate。
I fell for the great American dream, female version, hook, line, and sinker. I, as many young women do, honest-to-God believed that once I Just Lost a Few Pounds, suddenly I would be a New You, I would have Ken-doll men chasing my thin legs down with bouquets of flowers on the street, I would become rich and famous and glamorous and lose my freckles and become blond and five foot ten. I would wear cool quasi-intellectual glasses and a man's oxford shirt in a sunny New York flat and sip coffee and say Mmmm and fold my paper neatly and He would come up behind me and look at me with an adoring gaze. I would swing sexily into my red coupe, and the wind would blow through my hair as I drove into some great big city, stepping off the elevator and striding (with a feminine but authoritative step) into my office where everyone would be impressed with my every feminine but authoritative word. In the evenings I would go home and make magical gourmet meals and eat three bites, and He would look at me in the candlelight and I would be a superwoman 1980s goddess, yes indeed...
What I Talk About When I Talk About Running by Haruki Murakami 太经典了无需赘言,因为这本书我在大二的时候pick up跑步,至今记得零下气温户外跑的感觉。
Letters from a Stoic by Seneca. Letter #13 On Groundless Fears
There are more things, Lucilius, likely to frighten us than there are to crush us; we suffer more often in imagination than in reality...The mind at times fashions for itself false shapes of evil when there are no signs that point to any evil; it twists into the worst construction some word of doubtful meaning; or it fancies some personal grudge to be more serious than it really is, considering not how angry the enemy is, but to what lengths he may go if he is angry. But life is not worth living, and there is no limit to our sorrows, if we indulge our fears to the greatest possible extent; in this matter, let prudence help you, and contemn with a resolute spirit even when it is in plain sight. If you cannot do this, counter one weakness with another, and temper your fear with hope. There is nothing so certain among these objects of fear that it is not more certain still that things we dread sink into nothing and that things we hope for mock us.
Requiem for a Dream by Hubert Selby
How to Stop Worrying and Start Living by Dale Carnegie 非常经典,很多tips and principles值得拿出来反复敲打自己。
