Dr. Xiao joined the School of Systems and Enterprises at Stevens in 2016. Her research interest is in software engineering, with a strong focus on software architecture and software quality. She is currently the PI on two NSF projects. The first project, entitled “Constructing a Community-Wide Software Architecture Infrastructure” aims to build the first software research instrument of its kind, providing an effective, community-wide platform for continuous integration of diverse tools and hosting a large number of recovered architectures. The second project, entitled “Test-Centric Architecture Modeling” aims to build an architectural modeling framework that bridges the gap between software testing and software architecture analysis. In another incubating project, Dr. Xiao and her team aim to leverage AI techniques to empower systematic performance optimization in software systems. The commonality of her projects is that they are all deeply rooted in addressing practical challenges in software development.

About Student Mentoring: Dr. Xiao aims to find concrete research problems with a high practical value that truly motivates and interests each student. Dr. Xiao focuses on training students' ability in critical thinking, problem conceptualization, engineering implementation, and technical communication. These form a comprehensive skill set critical for students’ future careers in the industry or in academia. In turn, what Dr. Xiao expects from the student, besides a strong technical background, is self-motivation, hardworking, and persistence. Dr. Xiao is enthusiastic to work with students as a strong team in addressing cutting-edge problems in software engineering practice.

Dr. Xiao has been supervising two Ph.D. students, Xiao Wang and Yutong Zhao, in their fourth and third year respectively (as the time of this writing in 2020). Both have published their first-author papers in conferences and journals (including ICSE, FSE, ICSA, ICPE, Journal of Systems, IEEE. Software, etc.). Xiao is expected to graduate in 2021, in preparation to launch his first job as a level two software engineer in Amazon. Yutong is expected to graduate (hopefully) in 2022. Just entering the third year of his Ph.D. study, he already published 4 conference papers, 3 as the first author, 1 in FSE (top Sw.E. conference), and 1 with the best paper nomination.
