As we all know childhood is almost happiest period during our lifetime, and in that age, children should enjoy themselves and have fun. There is no denying the fact that they are naive and play sports for fun. However, I believe it is an exaggeration to say they should play sports only for fun.

First of all, it is important to make them know how important the cooperation is, that could reveal during the competitions. Since a child play sports as a member of team, he has to cooperate with rest of children in order to win the match, even they are too young to understand the concept--Teamwork .

In addition, during the competition they could have a opportunity to learn from both teammates and competitors, that could, undoubtedly , enhance their skills. Let us take football for example, When they play football in a match, they have to pay attention to the one who take the ball, and if the child do a good job, he will memorize such actions and use them in the similar cases. Had they played only for fun, they actually have fun, but what a pity for them to lose such a good chance to learn from others.

Last but not least, the joy out of victory will last longer than that brought from fun. When they win the competition, they will realize the happiness not only from their own, but from their team, and they will feel honored to be one of it, then every time they recall such scene in which they cooperate with their teammates, struggle to compete with opponents, and just be the victor, they will be proud of themselves. In this sense, it is another way to get fun for playing sports.

As the reasons given above, we can safely conclude that children should not play sports only for fun, what is more, attending competitions, arguably, is beneficial for their growth.
