Under the supervision of Professor Samer Hamdar, the Center for Intelligent Systems Research conducts research activities in mainly three areas. The first area is related to vehicular and pedestrian traffic dynamics where multiple data sources (driving simulator, instrumented vehicle, detectors and data libraries) are utilized to calibrate and validate newly developed and existing models in different weather and infrastructure-related conditions. The second area focuses on disaster management and evacuation analysis. The research team is studying how social networks may be translated into transportation demand loading patterns in response to different information propagation strategies. The third area aims to build more sustainable multi-modal networks with special attention to non-motorized transportation modes. The corresponding research activities are partially funded by the Civil Infrastructure Systems Program at the National Science Foundation.

About us: The George Washington University (GW) Transportation Program (GWTP) con-ducts funda-mental and applied research in multiple areas, including 1) driver and pedestri-an detection and model-ing, 2) traffic flow theory, 3) transportation safety, 4) network flow problems (social and transportation networks), 5) intelligent transportation systems (including connected and autonomous systems with V2V and V2I communications), and 6) evacuation modeling and emergency management. The GWTP team is composed of faculty members and students from different backgrounds. Our team has success-fully established a collaborative active research environment. GWTP projects are often cross- or inter-disciplinary and are strengthened by research groups from various fields. Moreover, the GWTP research is integrated into a multidisciplinary educational curriculum that draws from different departments at the GW School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.
Description: The George Washington University Transportation Program are looking to work with one graduate assistant who would be involved in developing/deploying the devic-es and developing the models in order to develop an in vehicle health anomaly detection system. The assistant will work with other team members to develop AI approaches for such purposes and integration of software and hardware to control autonomous vehicles in order to demonstrated the driving anomaly detection system. Backgrounds in hardware integra-tion, ro-botics control and circuits are desired.
Requirements:
In process of an undergraduate or Master of Science (MS) degree in Civil Engi-neering, Com-puter Engineering, Electrical Engineering or Mechanical Engineer-ing with the need to pursue a Philosophical Doctorate (PhD) or MS degree in Transportation Engineering in the Spring of 2023.
- Strong Mathematical and/or Physics Modeling background.
- Good written and oral communication skills.
- Enthusiasm for learning new technologies.
- Experience with app development, computer vision and hardware deployment.
- Experience with backend development (AWS), Alexa skill development, communication proto-cols and system architectures.
- Experience with Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), Deep Learn-ing (DL), IoT, robotics or other related technology areas.
Desired: Experience with traffic engineering and autonomous vehicle research.
