Q:Is it a strict line for applicants to get 100 or above TOEFL score?

哈这个问题我也问了USC的小秘，也说没有minimum。

具体回复如下：
While the TOEFL or IELTS is a required application material, there is no minimum TOEFL or IELTS score required for admission to the Viterbi School. Admitted international students are required to take the USC International Student English (ISE) examination during orientation. The results will determine if you will be required to take English language courses at USC. Students who achieve a score of 90 or higher on the internet-based TOEFL (including a minimum score of 20 in each section) OR a 6.5 on the IELTS (with a minimum score of 6 in each section) are exempt from taking the ISE exam. If you take the TOEFL or IELTS more than once, we will consider the best overall score you obtained from one of the tests. To be considered for the ISE exam, your official scores need to arrive at USC before orientation.
TOEFL and IELTS scores are valid when taken within two years of the start of the intended application semester. The fall semester starts in August, and the spring semester starts in January.
也就是说托福最早只能是2011年8月的，在那之前考的亲们都准备好1400块银子再考一次吧。。。

2. 然后问AW3.5行不行：
    3.5 is fine; below 3.0 would not be admitted.
3. 会不会降MS：
    *You* must decide to apply for either MS or for Ph.D., based on your goals and, on how confident you are about the strength of your application--because you will either only be admitted or refused admission, based on that strength.  You will only be considered for the degree to which you apply, and to no other.

1. One of my professor agreed to recommend me for my application, but he asked me to use his public email instead of one ended with .edu. I wonder if it's OK to use public mailbox for the recommendation letter.

2.What are the chance of doing some research work in the CGGT program
and is it possible to be enrolled in the doctoral program directly after finishing the CGGT program

1.It is your recommender’s option which email address is used.
2.No candidate should commence a CIS master’s program with the expectation
of transferring to the doctoral program.  Information re: masters-> phd

UPenn的master转Phd貌似比较难 要参加什么WPE I考试

We ususally enroll 20-30 new students for fall term. For TOEFL scores, your application as a whole is more important than individual scores and weaknesses can be balanced by strengths in other parts of the application.

However, the "ESM Applications Check List" requires two copies of official sealed transcript to be sent(one to the graduate school). I want to ask may I just upload the scanned copy before I am admitted?

Dear Applicant

That will be fine, you will upload your information and then if you are accepted into the program, then I ask for your official final transcripts  (2 copies) I send the one to the graduate school and the other stays in the department.

I’m writing to ask a question about the grad school application.  I saw on the website that there are interviews which in February and March in the timeline.  Does it mean that the applicants for the MEng program will be interviewed during the application?  If so, is it via phone or do I have to travel to Berkeley for a face-to-face interview?

For the MEng program, we will do some interviews if we have additional questions from an application. These interviews will take place after the online application is due (after Feb 1), and they will take place either by phone or Skype unless the applicant is here near Berkeley in which case we would love to meet you in person. Traveling to Berkeley from outside of the area is not necessary for the interview and will not be an advantage for the admissions decision-making.

MS applicants are not interviewed, though sometimes the faculty will call MS and PhD applicants if they have questions. Only some of the MEng applicants are interviewed if we have questions.

哇哇已经开始主动问我要申MS还是MEng吗，这怎么能不继续跟她深入讨论一下呢，于是乎我问了如下问题：

a) Will I be more competitive when hunting a job if I take a MS program rather than a MEng program?  

b) Will the MS program bring me some more advantages since it seems that MS program will give me a deeper insight in the field I'm interested?

c) Is it more difficult to be admitted to theMS program than the MEng program?

于是乎，这位Jennifer比较详细地给出了一个关于很多人都在问的关于MEng到底是什么性质的啊好不好找工作啊这样的问题的一个回答：

These are good questions. The MS is much more difficult to get into than the MEng because for research, we are primarily a PhD program.  The benefits of the MEng are more in the leadership and business skills learned with the degree. I like to think of the MEng as a kind of MBA for engineers. It is true that with the MS, you would go deeper into your field than with the MEng.  Industry is not clear on the differences between the degrees, so it really gives you the opportunity to explain to them what your degree program was about and what you gained from it.
