Transamerica, the 100-year-old life insurer and investment manager, has decided to give its staff a week of unpaid leave, according to an email sent to staff yesterday. A spokesman for the Iowa-based company confirmed the news in an e-mailed statement, saying the unpaid leave will take place over the next six months and will not affect benefits. Hourly workers will be asked to take three days off without pay. "Given the economic impact of the outbreak, this is a responsible step," the statement said. The company's approach contrasts sharply with that of its financial-services peers, such as the nation's largest Banks. Many Banks, including Morgan Stanley, Bank of America and Citigroup, have told employees they won't lay off workers during the epidemic.  source
