In mid-April, Finn Gnadt, an 18-year-old student from Kiel, Germany, contracted sarS-COV-2 coronavirus. NAT thought he had survived the virus and had recovered, but after a few days he began to feel tired and extremely thirsty. He was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in early May, and his doctor at University Hospital Schleswig-Holstein in Kiel said the outbreak could be linked to a viral infection. In most people with type 1 diabetes, the body's immune cells often suddenly start destroying the beta cells in the pancreas that produce the insulin hormone. In NAT's case, Holstein suspected that the virus had destroyed his beta cells because his blood did not have the type of immune cells that typically destroy the islets in which beta cells reside.  source
