Columbia biostats at CUMC (2014 Fall orientation information updated 2014/03/30)

先 clarify 一下，此贴是关于 biostats@Columbia U Medical Center Campus，最近很多版友留言询问 stats@Columbia U Morningside Campus，LZ 因为不是很了解所以不好回答，关于 stats 的情况请移步其他帖子，地里这方面帖子应该很多~

根据 orientation 系主任给的数据：
在校学生总人数 Total=112，比例分别是 MS=66%，PhD=15%，DrPH=10%，MPH=9%

MS 分6个Track：

. .иAccelerated Predoctoral Training(APT)
Clinical Research Methods(CRM)
Patient Oriented Research(POR)
Pharmaceutical Statistics(PS)
Statistical Genetics(SG)
Theory & Methods(TM)

各 Track 课程设置不太一样，详情见最后的链接

MS/CRM 和 MS/POR 要求申请人已经有 an advanced degree in a clinical discipline or public health 感觉是针对 public health professionals 的，不太适合小本

MS/APT 有 fellowship，今年只招了1个。因为本校 PhD 只招有 MS 学位的，所以开了这么个 Track 让小本申，但是听学长说倾向于发给美国人

MS/TM 中国人基本都是这个Track，课程设置相对理论些，和其他 Track 课程设置差别比较大，上课的时候和 MPH 以及 PhD 一起

人数方面 MS=74，MS/TM=55%，MS/POR=26%，其他不知

根据最近的信息更新一下数字，12Fall MS/TM 15 人左右(中国人 10+ 位)，13Fall 现在 24 人，包括 从 MPH/Epi 转来的 >= 4 位 和 从 MS/SG 转来的 2 位
MS/TM 中国人 15+ 的样子 ，背景方面

中国人：大陆本 physics@PKU, bio&econ@THU, bio@PKU/FDU/SJTU/WHU/SYSU/北师大,  环境@NKU
            海本    stats&math@UW, math&acturial@OSU, stats&econ@UMiami, IE@UToronto, psy@UMich

美国人：stats&biometry@Cornell*2, neuro&stats@UCDavis，BioEng@WUSTL

值得注意的是今年男生有7个(2位转过来的)，和往年比多了很多，11Fall 1个男生，12Fall 2个。7个男生里 一位有工作经验(05级本)，一位 quit bio PhD(bio@Cornell+bio PhD@UPitt) 过来的，一位 bio PhD 今年毕业(03级本，bio@厦大+bio PhD@UKentucky)，LZ 跟着一群哥哥们混有人罩的感觉还是很爽的~

PhD 只招有 MS 学位的，系里建议想读PhD的小本申 MS/APT 或 MS/TM

13Fall 今年招了6个，算是很多了，3个中国人，3个韩国人。12Fall 发了4个最后只剩了2个(其中一位学长背景 biotech@SJTU+10Fall MS/TM)，所以今年招得比较多。其中2个是 11Fall 本校 biostats MS/TM，但是其中一位韩国人貌似是AD(应该是只给了 tuition waive，stipend 要自己找 RA)。背景方面

中国人：全是学姐 bio@FDU+MS/TM biostats@Columbia, math@SDU+MS stats@UIUC, stats@ZJU+MMath stats-biostats@UWaterloo

韩国人：stats@Seoul National U+ScM biostats@Harvard，stats+MS stats@Seoul National U, MS/TM biostats@Columbia(only tuition waive, no fellowship)

DrPH 今年也是6个。

recitation 碰到一位已经有工作经验的美国人是今年的 DrPH，以前在 Duke 和 UMich 工作过，现在是 part-time 工作，full time student，说学校给了她 tuition waive，但是木有 stipend

orientation 各种活动还是很丰富很给力的，包括各种讲座+蹭吃蹭喝，作为Mailman学生花半价去百老汇看一次歌剧感觉还是不错。

系里大概一两周会有 wine & cheese，不同年级学生见面聊一聊，Faculty也都会来，学生可以上去作自我介绍，据说很快系里教授就认全了~

Although there is big variance in the biostats PhD programs, the biostats MS programs basically teach the same things though might be going at different paces. One's placement generally depends on one's own competitiveness according to an AP graduating from Hopkins.   
Of course, rec letters matter a lot. You have the chance to impress the big guys who have established their fames in the field if you are in a top program like UW or Hopkins. Here at Columbia, young tenure-track assistant professors and associate professors at middle-age are doing great but they are not that famous yet.

想请问学长，TM的MS申请本系的PHD难度有多大？是不是没有直接考qualify升phd的机会？之前在地里看到有人说转phd会很容易，不知是否准确。非常感谢！

疙瘩这个项目还要交writing sample。。一定要是很专业的proposal，abstract或者paper吗？跪求指导

有wine有cheese，太适合我这种人的学校了。

今年funding不多啊，上半年的时候还听系主任哭穷过 - 于是为了学习主校区stat program的捞钱思路，13fall的master program就立马扩招了。

phd虽然招的多但是我听说很多人给的是ad。
不知道招进来的人有几个是拿fellowship的。

貌似很多广东大学的学生都去了哥大的统计,哥大统计真的很水吗?

说说中国人本科出身吧

stats 那边不是特别了解，CUMC 这边和 Morningside 那边隔了 50 条街了==
13Fall 统计新生群里 无论 大陆本还是海本，好学校毕业的都不少
不过去偶尔去主校区听课，教室里人确实比较多

木有一个个问大家的背景，LZ 知道的几位
大陆本 北清复交 武大 北师大 大多生物或者医学背景
海本 UW UMich UMiami OSU 大多统计或者精算背景

广东这边暨南大学,中山大学好多学生大概至少有6名左右申请到哥大统计,背景的话T101,GRE 320+,绩点都是3.8+.项目就几个,差不多这样背景
